OPTOMETRIC MULTISENSORY TRAINING (OMST)

OMST provides multiple sensory stimuli simultaneously, incorporating vision, vestibular, and auditory stimulation to help re-train the brain on a subcortical level. It has been life-changing for so many of our patients (and staff!).

HOW DOES IT WORK?

OMST is a 30-day program consisting of 12 consecutive days in the office, followed by 18 consecutive days at home with just the visual stimulation.

It includes auditory stimulation (modulated music), vestibular (inner ear) stimulation (gentle movement of the table), and visual input (optometric phototherapy light). The light gently stimulates the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in a specific sequence over the course of the program.

Each of the 12 days in the office consist of two 25-30 minute sessions with a short break in between. During the 18 days at home, two 20-minute sessions are done with the light box (once upon waking and once before bed).

BENEFITS

Each patient's experience is unique, but the following areas are frequently improved by OMST:

  • Emotional and behavioral regulation

  • Gross and fine motor control

  • Balance

  • Memory

  • Organization and planning

  • Judgment

  • Mental flexibility

  • Receptive/expressive language

  • Sensory modulation

  • Sleep

  • Peripheral and spatial awareness

WHO NEEDS OMST?

Most people would likely benefit from OMST, but it is exceptionally beneficial to neurodivergent (including autism spectrum, ADHD, anxiety, OCD) and concussion patients.

RESEARCH

Research conducted by Dr. Steven Curtis, OD on post-concussion syndrome patients showed that 96% of participants reported improvements (40-50% reduction in symptoms) within 38 days. Ongoing research projects are currently being conducted at Western College of Optometry.
